Ghana 8 (2017) El Humedal De Owabi

Owabi es una pequeña reserva de 13 km2 que protege un lago, embalsado y naturalizado, con un denso bosque húmedo a su alrededor. Se sitúa al este de Kumasi, la gran población del centro del país que es paso obligado al ir y venir de Mole, así que hicimos una parada al regreso del parque.

El humedal está en la lista Ramsar sin embargo, como ya comenté con relación a Amanzuri, el verano no es el mejor momento para ver aves en estas zonas húmedas. Con aguas altas apenas logramos ver una jacana (Actophilornis africanus) y un ave martillo (Scopus umbretta). A pesar de eso, los registros de aves de la reserva alcanzan las 180 especies y es de gran interés para aves invernantes.

Las orillas del lago están cubiertas por un bosque con abundantes palmeras Raphia y multitud de plantas trepadoras que aprovechan la luz del borde forestal para encaramarse al arbolado. La reserva tiene pocas visitas, apenas hay carteles para llegar, ni infraestructuras. Con suerte, dimos con un guía que nos llevó por algunos de los senderos del bosque.

Después de las restricciones de movimiento en Mole, llegar a Owabi fue un respiro. Una reserva como esta tiene mucho menos que ofrecer que un gran parque pero, al menos, pudimos deambular 3 horas sin tener que dar explicaciones por cada parada al guía. Y eso se agradece.

En pocos zonas hay una vista sobre las aguas libres, tal es la exuberancia de las orillas del humedal. Así, la mayor parte del recorrido fue dentro del bosque. En el interior es difícil ver aves y solo en una ocasión pudimos oír el paso de un grupo de cercopitecos por la bóveda, pero no se dejaron ver. Por ello nos centramos en los detalles de la flora y en la fauna mínima.

Sin prisas pudimos fotografiar termiteros, mariposas, libélulas, chinches o arañas. Vimos tres tipos de arañas tejedoras que, a nivel de género, se diferencian bien. Las Argiope forman parte de un género cosmopolita aunque las que vimos tenían unas telas con estabilizadores en espiral muy característicos.

Las otras arañas tejedoras fueron especies de los géneros Gasteracantha y Nephila. Estas tienen una distribución mundial algo más restringida, no las hay en Europa y en África hay que buscarlas al sur del Sáhara. Las Gasteracantha tiene llamativas formas espinosas y las Nephila se caracterizan por producir la seda dorada y no blanca o plateada como hacen otras arañas tejedoras.

También tuvimos tiempo para detenernos y disfrutar de las mariposas forestales, de ninfálidos como las Euphaedra con sus destellos de manchas azules en sus vuelos dentro del bosque, de las colas de las mariposas Hypolycaena o de la contrastada Aterica galene. Continue reading
