EL GOLPE DE PRAGA (Febrero, 1948): PISTOLETAZO DE SALIDA DE LA GUERRA FRÍA

Checoslovaquia era un país avanzado económicamente y con una tradición democrática burguesa. En política exterior se mostraba filocomunista, en 1943 el gobierno de E. Benès había establecido una alianza con la URSS. Una vez liberado del poder de los nazis, Benès, que había introducido en su gobierno a los comunistas, pretendía mantener la democracia parlamentaria y el multipartidismo. En el campo social, el gobierno adoptó un programa claramente reformista nacionalizando algunos sectores como la industria pesada.

Los afiliados al Partido Comunista no dejaron de crecer, pasaron de 715.776 en 1945 a más de 2 millones en 1948. En las elecciones de 1946, los comunistas obtuvieron casi el 38 % de los votos, mientras que la socialdemocracia se quedaba en el 12,2 %. Se estableció un gobierno de coalición presidido por Benès y con el comunista K. Gottwald como primer ministro. Pronto surgieron desavenencias en el ejecutivo, especialmente cuando, por presiones de la URSS, tuvieron que renunciar a los beneficios del Plan Marshall.

Los comunistas, ante un previsible fuerte retroceso electoral en la elecciones que iban a tener lugar en mayo de 1948, acusaron a la derecha de preparar un golpe. Doce ministros no comunitstas presentaron su dimisión el 21 de febrero. Los comunistas, dirigidos por K. Gottwald y con el beneplacito de la URSS, organizaron una fuerte agitación social (por todo el país surgieron "Comités de Acción") que obligaron a Benès a formar un gobierno controlado por los comunistas. Esto es lo que se conoce como el Golpe de Praga (25, febrero de 1948). Benès abandonó el gobierno en mayo y en junio fueron expulsados los liberales que quedaban en el gobierno, así Checoslovaquia pasaba a ser una "democracia popular", un régimen de partido único.

El Golpe fue la primera puesta en práctica de las ideasde Jdanov y el pistoletazo de salida de la Guerra Fría. Hizo que apareciese una fuerte agitación anticomunista en los países del bloque capitalista.

Tras la salida de Bènes comenzó una purga de funcionarios y una serie de detenciones. El episodio más dramático fue la muerte de Jan Masaryk, ex-Ministro de Exteriores, hallado muerto el 10 de marzo bajo una ventana del Ministerio del Interior ¿le arrojaron por ella? ¿se suicidó? Lo primero tiene más visos de ser lo cierto.
