El Hubble revela por qué se atenuó 'Betelgeuse' una de la estrellas más brillantes de nuestra galaxia, los científicos sugieren que una nube de polvo "bloqueo la luz una cuarta parte de la superficie".

Nuevas observaciones del telescopio espacial Hubble sugieren que la atenuación inesperada de la estrella supergigante roja Betelgeuse, parte de la constelación de Orión, probablemente fue causada por una inmensa cantidad de material caliente que, al ser expulsado al espacio, formó una nube de polvo que, a su vez, bloqueó la luz proveniente de la superficie de la estrella.

La que es una de las estrellas más brillantes de la Vía Láctea, casi mil veces mayor que el Sol y situada a 725 años luz de la Tierra, comenzó a perder luminosidad en octubre del año pasado, algo que algunos expertos sugirieron que podría significar que la estrella se acercaba a su muerte y pronto estallaría en una supernova.

Sin embargo, varios meses de observaciones espectroscópicas de luz ultravioleta del Hubble proporcionaron nuevas pistas importantes sobre el mecanismo detrás de la atenuación de Betelgeuse. En septiembre, octubre y noviembre de 2019 el telescopio captó señales de material denso y calentado moviéndose a través de la atmósfera de la estrella. En diciembre, varios telescopios terrestres observaron que el supergigante rojo disminuía en brillo en su hemisferio sur.

El telescopio vio el plasma supercaliente que se liberó de la superficie de la estrella, se enfrió posteriormente en las capas externas de la atmósfera y finalmente se convirtió en una nube de polvo.

"La nube de polvo resultante bloqueó la luz de aproximadamente una cuarta parte de la superficie de la estrella, comenzando a finales de 2019. Para abril de 2020, la estrella recuperó su brillo normal", explicaron los investigadores en un comunicado publicado por la NASA.
