La Administración Nacional de Aeronáutica y del Espacio (NASA) está exhortando a estudiantes universitarios a participar en la solución de un problema con el polvo lunar, como parte de su proyecto Artemis de exploración de la Luna.

El inconveniente con este polvo consiste en que sus partículas abrasivas, que se adhieren a casi cualquier tipo de superficie, dañan los equipos, poniendo en riesgo la salud de los astronautas, señala la NASA. La búsqueda de la solución se realizará a través de un concurso de ideas creativas acerca de posibles soluciones para mitigar el daño.

Las categorías de ideas incluyen la prevención y mitigación del polvo durante los aterrizajes, la tolerancia al polvo de los trajes espaciales, la limpieza del polvo exterior y el control del mismo dentro de los hábitats.

La junta de jueces de la NASA seleccionará entre cinco y diez equipos que recibirán 180.000 dólares para diseñar, construir, probar y demostrar su solución al problema.

"Es clave demostrar que (el candidato) está dispuesto a proporcionar soluciones técnicas significativas para apoyar las misiones lunares a corto plazo, porque la NASA puede estar interesada en incluir todo o parte de los conceptos viables en una futura misión espacial", reza el comunicado de la agencia espacial.
