Tushar's Stock Tips: La Melodía Pacifista Irlandesa Que Se Usó Como Himno De Guerra, Canción Infantil Y Tema Country

La entrada de hoy nos lleva a un tema musical cuya melodía casi todo el mundo reconocerá, pero cuya historia es antigua y curiosa y ha dado lugar a muchas versiones en las que se ha modificado la pacifista versión original por otras más bélicas e incluso por una canción infantil sobre el Arca de Noé.
El tema original es una melodía popular irlandesa de principios del siglo XIX. Tras combatir por Inglaterra en la guerra de Ceilán, Johnny regresa a Irlanda cojo, tuerto y manco. En el camino a casa se encuentra con su antigua novia que, además de reprocharle el que la abandonara para ir a la guerra, le dice «Johnny, apenas te reconozco».
La melodía pasó a EE.UU. durante la guerra de Secesión y fue usada por ambos bandos, pero no como un tema pacifista sino como un himno de guerra en el que se glosa cómo Johnny será recibido como un héroe cuando vuelva a casa entre el sonar de las campanas, la admiración de las damas y la envidia de los hombres.
Posteriormente la melodía se usó como canción infantil en la que los animales suben al Arca de Noé de dos en dos.
En los años 40 con la misma melodía se compuso una canción country llamada "Ghost riders in the sky". En los años 60 el movimiento de la canción protesta recuperó el espíritu original del tema para criticar la guerra de Vietnam.
La melodía ha sido usada en multitud de películas ("Teléfono rojo volamos hacia Moscú", "La jungla de cristal") y de anuncios televisivos. Trasteando por Youtube puede incluso encontrarse una curiosa versión del tema country interpretado por Tom Jones y Raphael.
Como digo, hay multitud de versiones (el grupo gallego Luar na Lubre tiene una basada en la letra sobre el Arca de Noé titulada Os Animais) pero empecemos por la que más responde al espíritu original y que incluye la letra en inglés y en castellano, interpretada por The Irish Rovers.
