El asteroide 2011 ES4, con un diámetro de entre 22 y 49 metros, se acercará a la Tierra el próximo 1 de septiembre, según el Laboratorio de Propulsión a Chorro (JPL, por sus siglas en inglés) de la NASA.

Se calcula que el objeto pase frente a nuestro planeta a una velocidad de más de 29.000 kilómetros por hora y a una distancia de tan solo 71.800 kilómetros. En comparación, la Luna se encuentra a unos 384.400 kilómetros de la Tierra.

El asteroide forma parte del grupo Apolo y tiene una órbita muy amplia alrededor de la Tierra y el Sol, con una trayectoria de vuelo que se cruza con la órbita terrestre. Pese a su paso cercano, el 2011 ES4 no representa una amenaza, ya que su diámetro es demasiado pequeño.
