El cambio climático y la consiguiente desaparición de las placas de hielo en el mar hacen que los osos polares sean cada vez más incapaces de alimentarse. En el escenario más favorable, la extinción solo sería aplazada.
El cambio climático podría ocasionar la casi extinción de los osos polares antes del fin de siglo al verse incapaces de alimentarse con la desaparición de las placas de hielo en el océano, según estudio publicado en la revista científica Nature Climate Change este lunes (20.07.2020).
Si las emisiones de gas con efecto invernadero siguen al mismo ritmo que en la actualidad, "la caída de la reproducción y la supervivencia pondrá en peligro la persistencia de casi todas las subpoblaciones de aquí a 2100", según los investigadores, quienes subrayan que incluso en el escenario más favorable la extinción de esos plantígrados solo sería aplazada.
Con el calentamiento del planeta, dos veces más rápido en el Ártico, la falta de hielo dura cada vez más tiempo. Incapaces de hallar en su entorno otro alimento tan rico como las focas, una mayor cantidad de osos famélicos se aventuran lejos de su territorio, cerca de las zonas habitadas.
Incluso si el calentamiento se limitara a 2,4°C con relación a la era preindustrial, eso "no garantizaría salvar a los osos polares a largo plazo", detalla el estudio.
El deshielo es un desafío especial para las hembras, que entran en el otoño a sus refugios para parir en medio del invierno y emerger luego en la primavera con sus oseznos. "Deben atrapar suficientes focas para guardar grasa y producir la leche requerida para alimentar a sus pequeños", explica a Steven Amstrup, uno de los autores del estudio y científico en jefe de la ONG Polar Bears International.
"Estimando el peso máximo y mínimo de los osos, y modelizando su gasto energético, hemos calculado el número límite de días de ayuno que puede soportar un oso polar antes de que la tasa de sobrevivencia de los adultos y pequeños comience a declinar", agrega Peter Molnar, de la universidad de Toronto.
Un macho de la subpoblación de la bahía de Hudson con peso 20% por debajo de lo normal al inicio del ayuno, solo sobrevivirá 125 días, en vez de 200 con peso normal.
Los 25.000 osos polares están repartidos en 19 subpoblaciones distintas en Canadá, Alaska, Siberia, la isla Svalbard y Groenlandia.
